Abstract
"The book “The Myth of Gender-Specific Swearing“ provides a semantic and pragmatic analysis of swearing in relation to gender. This analysis is based on a sociolinguistic empirical study. The author examines how language and language use arc affected by the social variable ‘gender‘. Furthermore, she challenges and reinterprets certain traditional and feminist linguistic views and proves her own hypotheses through empincal research. She provides lists of male- and female-specific insult terms and examines gender differences as well as similarities in swearing.
While there has been research on swearing, gender or communication, Berger‘s study is one of the first to examine foul language and its language use in relation to gender. “The Myth of Gender-Specific Swearing“ thus, sheds important new light on modern English Gender Studies."
