Abstract
Economic transformation is a challenge facing not only the young democracies in Eastern Europe, who currently achieved a reasonable progress on their way from a socialist to a market economy. The various questions emerging around establishing working market conditions in order to improve allocation, growth and distribution are key issues for economic development in several regions across the world as well as on a supranational level.
The INFER Annual Conference 2001 on "Economics of Transformation - Theory and Politics: Experiences and Challenges in Eastern Germany, Europe and in a World-wide Perspective", in Erfurt, Germany, in September 2001, offered a platform to discuss all these topics. Researchers and professionals from three continents and more than ten countries presented theoretical findings and empirical papers. Furthermore, a focal point was, which conclusions could be drawn from those theories and practical experiences for the current EU-Enlargement process.
All twenty-five presented papers and both, the theoretical as well as the practical introductory lecture of the Annual Conference, are included in this volume.
